Top 5: Most Underrated Dragonball Z Characters

Nostalgia is a feeling most get when thinking of Dragonball Z. It is arguably the greatest animated action series of any medium ever. Recently, a new sequel series, Dragonball Super, has premiered in Japan. The first addition to a Dragonball series in over 18 years. In honor of the return of some of our favorite characters in new adventures, I have compiled a Top 5 list of who I regard as the Top 5 most underrated characters from the Dragonball Z franchise. Number 1 just might surprise you.

5. THE GINYU FORCE
5. THE GINYU FORCE

The Ginyu Force were five bad-to-the-bone dudes. Each was deadly and provided a serviceable obstacle to the heroes. Even Vegeta and all of his Saiyan might, initially couldn’t match up to the likes of Recoome. Even Guido was surprisingly more capable then he received credit for. Burter, and Jeice never really received the opportunity to showcase their talents, it wasn’t necessary. Due to Goku’s leap in power level, Burter and Jeice became afterthoughts once Goku arrives. However, had Jeice or Burter won Rock, Paper, Scissors, would Vegeta, Gohan and Krillin performed any better against them? Captain Ginyu even provided a nice challenge to Goku. He even got the better of him until Vegeta swooped in and saved the day. Not many characters can claim that achievement.

4. ANDROID 17 & 18
4. ANDROID 17 & 18

Android 17 and 18 were the psychotic robotic love-child of doctor Gero and his obsession with revenge towards Goku. These two villains just want to have fun, at the expense of the entire planet. In the alternate timeline in which Future Trunks is from, there was no Majin Buu, there was no Cell. These two defeated Earth’s Special Forces and murdered everyone but Goku and Gohan. They probably would have taken out Goku too if the heart disease hadn’t done the dirty work for them already. Even in the main timeline, it takes training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to match their awesome strength. Ultimately it was Cell, and Vegeta’s pride, who absorbed both androids, thus ridding the world of their reign of terror. Without Cell’s lust for his final form, maybe Trunk’s future would have repeated itself.

3. KRILLIN
3. KRILLIN

Throughout the series Krillin is under estimated, yet he is the only human character that is relevant throughout most of the series. Krillin goes toe-to-toe with almost every major villain deep into the series, despite ultimately being out matched every time. By the end of the Frieza saga, it is clear Krillin won’t be able to keep increasing his power level at the rate of Vegeta, Gohan, and even Piccolo. However, knowing he can no longer keep pace with the power level of the Super Saiyans and multiple final form villains, he continues to aid his friends. While his role diminishes as the series progresses, he still becomes the strongest human character of the franchise.

2. PICCOLO
2. PICCOLO

The only character in the series that was able to keep pace with the Saiyans. He trained possibly the most important character of the series. After fusing with Nail he is able to best Frieza in his second form and briefly matched up well with him in the Third Form. Piccolo was even able to hang with Cell after fusing with Kami. Also, Piccolo is one of the coolest characters in the show. He’s mysterious and always seems mad at the world. Yet his character develops through the series as he becomes more and more of a hero. He reaches his pinnacle when he finally reunites with Kami.

1. THE WARRIOR CLASS SAIYAN NAPPA
1. THE WARRIOR CLASS SAIYAN NAPPA

People forget how bad Nappa was. He was the only character to defeat three of the Z fighters. That’s not even counting Yamcha who was taken out by a Saibaman under the direction of Nappa. Yeah, Frieza ended the lives of Vegeta, Krillin, and Dende but it took him three forms to do it. Nappa eliminated his opponents effortlessly. At the time, Tien and Piccolo were two of the strongest and most experienced of the bunch. Nappa defeated them with ease. He survived Choatzu’s most powerful attack, only losing a few chunks of armor. He even whooped up on Gohan and pounded Krillin and barely broke a sweat through it all. Yes Vegeta was clearly the stronger of the two Saiyans. Vegeta goes on into the series to do many great things, becoming a favorite character of many. People forget about Nappa, Vegeta’s original ally. He was a capable villain who decimated and bullied the Z Fighters.
