John Bernthal, whose credits include The Walking Dead, Fury, and The Wolf of Wall Street, has been cast as The Punisher.
My initial reaction to this casting was shock. Shock at the casting of John Bernthal, and shock at the reality that The Punisher would again grace our televisions. First of all, there was no hint that The Punisher would be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This came completely from left field. However, this move seems logical. The Punisher fits in the Netflix MCU world that the Daredevil created. He is a cool character with an interesting motive. In my opinion he is a character the average audience could gravitate towards. As a part of season 2 of an already popular series,The Punisher’s exposure will expand. (Thoughts on Daredevil Season 1)
As for the casting of Bernthal itself, again shock was my initial reaction. However, after considering his previous roles and the ability of the actor himself, I have confidence with this selection. No, Bernthal is not the first person I think of when I hear of The Punisher casting. Regardless, Bernthal will do a great job. He is a good actor who has proven he has the ability to deliver great performances. Bernthal has played characters that have tip-toed the line of questionable sanity. Frank Castle as a character is a self-righteous psychopath who takes the law into his own hands. He is a character that does all the wrong things for the right reasons. He is a lunatic on a quest of insatiable vengeance. Anyone playing this character will need to be able to portray someone who could tip-toe the line between sanity and insanity.
